I only know the situation as you've presented it, but if it were me I'd tell this girl that "well you should talk to your cereal and see if you're really ready to commit to only having THAT cereal for breakfast the rest of your life or not. If you decide to stop eating only that cereal and try eating french toast for breakfast instead then I know french toast would like that. but you can't have both cereal and french toast for breakfast."


I would say that before it starts to border on emotional cheating or you get involved with something messy. But that's just my suggestion, we're here for support whatever happens

I'm pretty frustrated. I've been with my girlfriend for two years, and we both came in after getting out of 4+ year relationships. We did everything too fast, moved in together in like three months, but have gotten through the highs and lows. She had a real hard time developing a social life since getting her Masters, because she got it via a multi-year study abroad in Berlin. By the time she moved home, her friends had moved or settled down etc.

Recently she's made a bunch of new friends, which is great. I love every one of them, specifically her new female friend because she tends to get along with guys more often and having a girl to go shopping with has been great for her. All the guys rule, too, and I trust her completely to grab dinner and hang with them.

My issue is she's not allowing me the same freedoms. I have a bunch of "buddies" but only three people that I consider to be thick-and-thin friends. Whenever I do anything with them, it's a problem. 100% of the time, like clockwork. I had plans for months to go out to Long Island and visit my best friend this past weekend, and was afraid it was going to lead to the same old fight where she ignores me before, during, and after. She was super offended by this, so I shut up, gave her a chance, and bam: exactly what I expected happened, and I asked her when am I allowed to call a spade a spade without being labeled presumptuous?

My friends are all varying levels of wary of her, and she makes no attempts to like them. She promised a few months ago to make an effort, but every time I suggest inviting them for games there's a new reason not to. My family is no longer inviting her to our family functions because she blows them off every single time. I'm pretty sure my sister would explode if she denied an invite to my niece's first birthday, so my sister didn't bother.

She's just generally gotten colder, and I'm not a perfect person by any means, but I make such an effort to do nice things, ask about her day, encourage her to go hang with her new friend even at the expense of our plans, and Idk what to do with it. Ugh.

 

my ex was the same way. never wanted anything to do with my family or friends. guilt trips for days if i made plans with them, even if she was invited and turned the offer down. wish i had some advice to give you but i never figured that problem out. just know that i can relate and sorry that that is an issue for you.

 

If any of you figure this out, let me know.

This will definitely be an topic of contention if I get into a relationship, since I am very independent and do my own things. I'd be inclined to invite them along, and if they don't want to go, that's their issue. Sure there are many compromises, but I am of the belief that you need to be able to have your own space and life in a relationship. Probable deal-breaker for me if they can't deal with it after multiple direct conversations.

 

my girlfriend is showing some serious resentment for my daughter and i don't know how to handle the situation anymore. i'm trying to be patient through this but when i tried talking to her about it she got really defensive and started acting very passive aggressively towards me. she does not have kids so i know this is new territory for her but i don't like how she is handling this. she knows my daughter and her mom just moved 2 hrs away and that my daughter isn't doing very well with the move. the whole situation just makes me very uncomfortable.

Yeah, I'm with you. The worst part of it all is I used to be very, very jealous, but have ditched 95% of those tendencies and keep the rest of it bottled up. Two of her closest friends are guys who pursued her for a very, very long time in her younger years, and she hangs out with them one on one all the time and I don't ever say a word because she deserves the trust until she proves otherwise. I just want the same freedom, even on a much more limited scale as I am not much of a party animal.

 

That's rough man, but I can tell you're the caliber of guy that doesn't need to be told that your daughter >>> any partner. I hope she comes around.
