Ugh. I don't know why, but Doughboys never shows up on iTunes for me. I have to set up my old, busted as fuck macbook with a screen that rarely works and resubscribe to download the newest episode. Veggie Grill is still the last episode that shows up, and even that showed up days late. This only happens with Feral Audio podcasts, where sometimes Harmontown or Real Life Sci-Fi doesn't show up.

 

Mitch is fucking grating so far this ep. Please start talking about the restaurant.

Mitch is great but dangerously close to Howard-Kremer-levels of strongly-held stupid opinions.

 

Everything he was saying felt way too much like a joke to be a strong opinion, it was hilarious and he knew what he was doing

The minisode with Matty Smith and Evan Susser is killing me. Only 5 episodes left and I'll be caught up... and then I don't know what I'm going to do with my life.

Found this podcast a few weeks ago and have really been enjoying it, listened to about 15 eps so far. Glad that there's a whole thread here devoted to it lol

oh, I will, but I will have to let it breathe for a bit. I have lots of other music/podcasts to catch up on once I'm up to date on Doughboys, so I'll manage... but there will definitely be some kind of void once there's not another new episode to just throw on immediately at any time.

Haha, absolute worst drop of all time. Also, they need to get back more well-known restaurants.

 

I created both of those drops. Here is a letter I sent to Nick. My intentions and name must be cleared:

SUBJECT: Mitch was being coy about the Anti-Semitic Drop (I made it)

Hey Nick,


I am the controversial creator of the drop featuring friend of podcast Evan Susser oscillating with not friend of the podcast Adolf Hitler. The drop in question was created and intended for play during munch madness. The intention of the comparison was to hyperbolize Evan’s increasing involvement and authority over the proceedings of the tournament.


HOWEVER, I did not realize Evan was Jewish until it was discussed a few episodes later, hence my cautioning Mitch. To paraphrase, I messaged Mitch telling him that the first drop in this message featured Susser’s voice turning into Hitler’s and that I wasn’t aware of Susser’s ethnic background when I made it. Then I assured him that the other drop “had zero Hitler in it.” Mitch responded to this and I quote, “Hahahah”. Maybe he literally never read beyond the first sentence on either reading.


I’m pretty sure the average smartphone screen is big enough so that one could peripherally notice that there was text beyond the single sentence Mitch read aloud. Either way, I just want it to be known that I am not an anti-Semite and any anti-Semitism was unintentional.


Sure, I intended my drop to be provocative, obviously. But not in the way of a “Tough Crowd with Colon Quin show” or “ The Opie and Anthony radio show”; where laughs are permitted and empathy omitted. The drop seemed to cast a dark cloud on the David Phillips episode by giving Mitch a wormhole to immediately start one of his searing and perceptive Bill Hicks style rants about young adult fiction and the unjust treatment of his favorite sports team.


I don’t really know who is at fault between myself and Mitch. On one hand, I made the drop in the first place. But Mitch technically had all the information one would need to know whether playing it was appropriate. Not only did I clearly alert him about the contents of the drop, he personally knows Susser and his ethnicity. Actually, I think we’d all agree Mitch is at fault.


I acted out of ignorance due to remoteness but Mitch knew exactly what he was doing. I find it interesting that Mitch excused his actions by saying, “I just play these.” In other words, Mitch was “just following orders”. Now where have I heard that before… I think the only orders that be followed on doughboys are the ones given to the hardworking waiters (AND WAITRESSESS!) at the eateries featured on this great Doughboys podcast.
