Stay Together for the Kids is a super pretty lil riff, the lyrics have some pretty resonant imagery for blink-182, particularly about something besides unrequited love or being annoyed at authority, the contrast between Mark's earnest voice in the verses and Tom's angst in the chorus is great, the piano compliments the song perfectly (was it the first time piano was on a blink-182 song? I don't remember if Adam's Song or even maybe All the Small Things or something had any), it's proto-Box Car Racer/untitled blink in that it was a little harder than anything they'd done before, a little more mature, with a few more layers/tweaks in the production to really heighten the heaviness of the chorus and the somberness of the verses.

First Date is super light, but it's perfect for what it is. I could get why some might not like it, structurally it's a bit like All the Small Things pt. II in its repetitiveness and simplicity, but I love Travis's rhythm on it, I love the guitar tones and parts, particularly in the bridge, and it was probably my favorite blink video when I was younger. The Fast Times at Ridgemont High vibe combined with blink was a particularly potent marriage of my interests. It's a super fun song and might break my personal top half of TOYPAJ cuts. It's a super strong album, Give Me One Good Reason aside.

 

The funniest thing about Happy Holidays, You Bastard was the edited version.

Haven't listened to that in a loooong time. I bought every version of TOYPAJ possible I think. I have the 3 colors versions and the edited one with no bonus tracks.

I was actually thinking about it this morning how prominent the parental advisory sticker were back in the day. I feel like I never see them in album covers anymore. Maybe because I mostly buy digitally or directly from smaller bands?

I did like the mention of Dead Wake - that book is really good, if you are into history. Wonder if Skiba is an Erik Larson fan - Torture Doctor was about HH Holmes and Larson wrote Devil In The White City (another great one).

 

Erik Larson and Cormac McCarthy are great but holy shit at claiming anything similar to their work is present in the last 28 songs blink-182 put out
