  1. And local or regional elections offer even more evidence, since national is sometimes harder to pin down. So far it's the exception when it happens and often it's not even a close race. :-/

Both parties offer "stuff" -- and sometimes the "stuff" is bigotry. It's a selling point and it works in many places. And for some reason we have seen the biogtry and lower taxes beat welfare, etc. quite a bit.

  2. The left has lost a lot of first principle arguments with those 40+ .... I think making sure the 18-24 group doesn't go the same way is important.

  3. At best it was maintaining what's left of the welfare state, not expanding it or rebuilding it. But, we also know that people hated Hillary for a variety of valid and completely fucked up reasons before the election and which had nothing to do with policy

I'm so confused. Jon Ossoff doesn't support healthcare for all people?

Where do you even see that?

  6. Americans seem to be sold more on "earning" stuff than being "given" is one thing I've seen as I got a little older. The idea that we'll cut your taxes, make it a square deal, and you go earn it ... seems to resonate more with a lot of people than welfare and saying we'll give you something. I often wonder if the American Pioneer Mythos got passed down to voters or something. Hah.

  8. Well, he doesn't support single payer, no

  9. "It is in our strong national interest that every American have quality, affordable health care. Whether it’s a newborn just home from the hospital, a mother battling cancer, or a veteran returned from overseas, our health isn’t negotiable. Our quality of life, our strength, and our prosperity depend on it."

He hasn't come out for single payer. Which in GA makes some sense.

And in a super wealthy area that you're not entirely familiar with running yet. You have to try to keep your cards close until you figure out if it's popular or not. I don't understand why it's not popular everywhere but I get why he would be afraid to, if he's thought about it.

americans are gonna lose their minds when automation hits every industry hard and its no longer necessary for the majority of people to have a job for society to function. lots of tough questions ahead in the next few decades for the people of this country and the traditional view of having to work or earn the "stuff" is going to be a huge hurdle for a lot of people.

Agreed on that...automation is going to basically make it a necessity that we go to at least a UBI

and the ubi is gonna happen far, far later than it should because of the idea of working and earning your living being so prevalent in american culture. its gonna take some serious damage to be done first for that tide to change, unfortunately.

  14. The "I got mine" psychology simply can't exist in that kind of world, I thought some of the older generation would get it when they saw their kids not able to find work or underemployed. It's not turning as much as I hoped. Anecdotally I hear lots of "participation trophy" and "they complain too much."

    so is banksy a socialist?

  16. I could be totally wrong, but I think Ossoff would vote for a SP bill if Dems had control and could pass it through.

And you underestimate the immigrant populations voting right wing that you could swing to your cause. The white Trump voters may straggle in eventually but we should focus on strengthening a base. You have no winning base without convincing the Assyrians, the white Cubans, etc. That's just the way it is. Sure your base can now win a few elections. But real, sustaining change? You're gonna struggle unless you try to draw from the other side. Yes, there's a massive non-voting population. But the same policies that attract the non-voters is bound to attract supposed opponents.

  18. I *think* I heard him say he was against on principle/in general too, not just due to pragmatism, but I'm not 100%. Although even that doesn't mean he wouldn't vote for it necessarily.

I believe so. Very anti-corporate at least.

I mean, I feel like we are stuck in this paradigm of Trump voters as the racist working class whites. But, they're not. Trump voters are the guys who own car dealerships. They are our enemies. There's no point in trying to deal with them. The point is trying to tie together the demands of working-class people to puncture their power. There are broad-based demands I think that can unite poor people to do so, which also addresses racial dynamics. For example, erasing the austerity politics that has been pervasive in many states, which leads to the cities relying upon policing black people as a source of making up their deficits.

  25. We know more about this group of people than any other in the last three years. Imagine who we could be getting stories on instead.
