As for horror trends, I'll always long for more surreal and/or art horror. I think the recent Golden age has been a good direction, with Babadook, Get Out, It Follows, The Witch indicating that we're maybe moving past (or at least splitting off) the cynical "we can make 8 figures with this 30k budget teen horror flick" years of the late 90s into early 10s and back into horror that is understood as deserving of critical analysis. Surreal horror is a little more nebulous, and in some ways I think we may never return to the acid years of weird arthouse horror and foreign curiosities, but the rise of indie flicks and return to smaller production studios gives me hope that we'll see more.

Look. I don't deny that I love the film, but it's for kitschy reasons. Did you ever check out My Little Eye? It's a lost voice of a generation.

I think the reason we're looking at a new era of hope for horror (in my estimation) is because we are at the point where horror is getting made by people who actually loved it growing up, and not people that chose it as a marketable genre to direct. Not that the two preclude each other, but that's why there are so many homage films now where in the early 00s most everything was a Saw knockoff or some uninspired, generic premise. People actually start caring about what horror means as a frame for stories, or even just as a genre that is enjoyable, rather than as a mode for moneymaking.

    Very good point.

There are also more outlets for horror that might not make a lot of money at the box office (Netflix, vod, etc) so you're seeing more studios supporting more creative films

Just out of curiosity..does anyone plan on checking out Jeepers Creepers 3 when it's released? I know it's a touchy subject, but I'm not here to judge.

I liked 1 and 2, but I was also like 14 when I saw them.

    I was a fan. I probably won't watch it.

I think I'll give it a shot, but there's a zero percent chance of me paying for it.

i think this makes complete sense and i hope its true. always cautiously optimistic, but i feel like we have a little bit more hopefulness in the horror community presently.

I wouldn't mind seeing a influx in creature features as well as long as they stick with practical effects.

I was pretty meh about the series anyway, but yeah, I don't really have any interest in supporting a pedophile by purchasing his work, and that plus other, better, not pedophile creators means I probably won't get around to watching it either. I think it's an individual choice that folks have to make though, and I understand there's a degree of art/artist separation to be had.

How about that Bradley Cooper cameo

Yah forget to mention this too. Watch Troma Project films and all the weird subgenre creature features is great, we need more.

I disliked it the first time I watched it (if you go back far enough in here you can find what I said exactly), but it clicked after a second watch. It's the slowest of burns and it suffers from it. It's not really horror horror, not really drama...just a ghost story.

How did y'all feel about The Monster? Mentioning creature feature made me think of it. Not a traditional one but I liked the character development, even if the flashbacks were a bit tough to watch.

I think that the horror aspect is the least compelling part of the movie, but I enjoyed it enough. The dynamics between the mother and daughter was definitely the most interesting part of the movie imo.

The Void still bothers the hell out of me with its poorly crafted plot, but the rest is pretty damn cool.

The Yankees play in an hour, time to find a movie to start and then stop halfway lol
