  1. At the national level...probably Bernie? Right? Pretty sure it's still Bernie unless someone is hiding out in the house somewhere

Yeah Bernie Sanders is definitely the furthest left national official as far as I can tell. There may be some random house members in there who are further left than he, but I doubt it.

  4. I mean, are we talking senate/congress people? Mayors, governors too?

Yeah I had no idea you grew up over here until you mentioned it. I've always imagined the difference in political discourse must be really difficult to adjust to. You guys might not like it, but even a Lib Dem-esque leader in America would feel revolutionary.

  6. I think it's Jim Webb

  7. I *think* Grijalva usually tops the "left" lists.

I was thinking strictly national level politicians....Since Gov's are routinely presidents/presidential candidates I guess you could include them, and I don't think any of them are further left than Bernie??

  11. Grijalva, Barbra Lee, Markey, Holmes Norton, even Wyden and Warren usually end up pretty high on the tracking lists of most "progressive" lists.

  12. Ed Murray of Seattle maybe?

  13. In reality I think the biggest lesson is that leftist candidates need coherent, all around leftist platforms. So that after talking about universal healthcare, in the face of a terrorist attack they can actually say something other than a watered down endorsement of the PATRIOT Act. See: Corbyn in the face of London and Manchester, where he could stand there and say "this is at least partially the result of our foreign policy," whereas Bernie's foreign policy was, as far as anyone can tell, exactly Hillary's. Fart.

Yeah and the people of GB are a shitton more progressive on that front than Americans. Americans have by far the least humility. You're not winning a lot of elections here by blaming Americans for dead Americans a day after the fact.

I think my biggest take away from this election is that Corbyn's election is largely reactionary. Not that it wasn't a fantastic result that I'm unhappy with or anything, but it wouldn't have been possible without the Conservatives acting the way they did. Absolute rejection of right wing politics was needed for something so vastly different. If that's indeed the case, the reaction from the left in the US, behind a coherent, charismatic candidate, could completely reshape your country.

Oh wait Sinclair is expanding to local markets? Fuck.

  19. If "a better candidate" (still no idea who btw) would've done even better than Corbyn, how come they couldn't even beat him in the election for Labour leader? Twice?

Problem is our further left candidates are neither coherent nor charismatic lol. Bernie is charismatic in some ways but not very coherent. I guess Lizzie Warren has some charisma, but she also gets tied up a lot in her words and thoughts and what not.

Our most charismatic guy/gal is Cory Booker and Kirsten Gillibrand...None of the far lefties here like them, but I'd also say they're further left than the Dems of the 90's, and further left than Hillary.

All I took from that is that you bought waitrose sandwiches, you Tory ;-)
The Lib Dems as they are right now is really pretty socially progressive in some of their policies (ignoring Farron's hesitancy to support gay marriage which is kinda gross). Progressive taxation in their policies but a little more evenly spread between income groups. Again, not as fantastic and radical as Labour's policies, but something that would be seen as radical in the US.

I only know of what Waitrose is from reading a YA series about 'zombies' that takes place in London lol

I think the only answer is a young politician. Someone that's coming in looking youthful, maybe a bit of a political outsider, but someone that is seen as attractive and can boil issues down to principles of fairness and inequality and very little personal attacking. The absolute antithesis to Trump, basically.
