same, there's a handful of songs/artists i like, and some i don't really like but can see why other people do, but for the most part i dislike rapping as a style just like some people hate screaming

Thank you! I was trying find the right way to phrase what I meant, and you hit it right on the head. It's the actual vocal styles of rapping that I am not big on.

I just want to properly clarify my position on this and then I promise I will drop it. I am not dismissing the genre or calling it bad. I hate when someone calls a form of music "bad" because taste is entire subjective and if that genre or artist has fans, then it obviously has appeal for some. I respect it for it's cultural and historical contexts, the intelligence and hard work it takes to be able to create it, and the talent of a lot of the people involved. Much of it just simply is not for me. I'm sorry if my opinion came off as close minded and generalizing, that wasn't the intent.

My dad automatically hates any music with screamed vocals and my mom thinks that any use of electronics in music is lazy and lacking of talent, both of which I heavily disagree on, so I can totally see why people may get annoyed at someone for disregarding a whole region of music.

electronics are lazy and show a lack of talent, which is why I make electronic music

If your response to realizing "I like everything except x" isn't "I'm going to find some bands/albums of x that I like", I feel bad for you, 'cause you're missing out.

I was a "everything except rap and country" person for a long time, but I realized that was asinine and lame.

Not that trying to pick on DesolateEarth though, their post makes sense.

FWIW I actually think that was about the most mature and adult handling of this situation in this thread's history.

I use to have no interest in hip hop or rap whatsoever. That slowly changed over time. Now I listen to all forms of rap and hip hop. And I'm glad I was able to widen my music taste in all aspects. From there I was able to really get into classical, hardcore and everything in between. I will say I've yet to find a modern country artist I enjoy.

"(I've Had) The Time of My Life" is, all nostalgia aside (and don't even start with any guilty pleasure bullshit), one of the greatest, most joyful songs of all time.

What does it mean when someone says "forms of rap / hip-hop"?

Is it the speed of the language / rap? The music that goes with it? Something else entirely?

I'm sure you'll appreciate that Jennifer Warnes is known for that and her work with Leonard Cohen

She had one of the most repeatedly accidentally successful careers ever for someone nobody knows. She sang three Oscar winning songs ("Up Where We Belong", "(I've Had) the Time of My Life" and "It Goes Like It Goes"), had a sizeable solo hit on her own ("Right Time of the Night") and made that incredible Famous Blue Raincoat album, but doesn't have the attendant notoriety you think that'd get you at all.

Will check these out. Thank you!

I like trap, I like jazz rap, "old school" etc. So yes. The instrumentals, the effects on the vocals, the speed of the track, basically all the elements of the track.

    Definitely unpopular:

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is a masterpiece in its own right but Summerteeth is my favorite Wilco album.

Drive-By Truckers are a very very very excellent modern country band, theyve tackled a lot of big subjects as well as just writing songs with sharp hooks and great instrumentation with a 3 guitar attack and some additional tertiary instruments a la Lynard Skynard. Worth checking them out as well, their last album was great and very critical of the Trump administration as well as other social issues.

i think id actually agree with you on this

It took me years to get into them even though all of my friends loved them. Now I'm pretty obsessed.

But yeah, not only Wilco! I get to see Tweedy (him and his son) and Glenn Kotche w/ S. Carey

    So excited.

Bluegrass is also very good. It's just so few bluegrass acts seem to want to make a career out of it. The Bluegrass scene is also pretty unbearable as far as music opinions goes.

I used to play in a punk/bluegrass band. That scene really is the worst.

    Seconded.

The record actually came out before Trump got elected, but it's even more powerful in the wake of all that shit. In retrospect, probably one of my ten favorite records from last year. (I think I had it 15 or 16.)
