I don't understand how it's nitpicking. Some people just like the marvel films more than DC, it's just an opinion. Everyone has one. It's like some people can't accept that a lot of people like marvel films more without there being a bias.

I feel like the nitpicking with Marvel vs DC is how thy appear to be marketed. Marvel is most clearly aimed at a wider demographic than I feel the DC movies are.

DC seems to be trying to create "epics" but I don't think they're anywhere close to that. Marvel makes fun, mostly light movies.

Marvel movies are certainly not perfect, Dr. Strange was nowhere near a great film, The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2 were blah, but overall they've made a world I enjoy getting into. I don't want to make it a DC vs Marvel thing as I really enjoy characters from each, but I will say that so far the DCEU hasn't really done much for me.

Coming from someone who finds something to hate in everything - there is a difference in the level/degree of dissatisfaction that the two grouping of films bring.

    Fuck Armond White.

Also, since I just saw the discussion, this is better than several Marvel movies.

So it's only better than have the Marvel films? Because there are currently 15 films in the MCU :p

  7. Better than at least 12. Maybe 13. I could argue 14. ***Way*** better than 10.

I'd put this above every Marvel film except Winter Soldier, Avengers, Guardians 1 & 2, Civil War, and Iron Man, honestly.

The tough thing with comparing MCU films and DCEU films is that, while most of Marvel's films are less flawed and overall tighter than the few DC films before Wonder Woman, but the Snyder films are bad films with distinct creative visions. So, even when you get past differing tastes in tone, you've gotta decide whether you prefer a unique mess or safe, decent, instantly forgettable film. Competent or ridiculous?

Anyways, I'd personally put every MCU film besides IM2 (dang did that suck) over the pre-WW DCEU films. But, I'd then put WW over all MCU films besides the 2 GOTG films and last 2 Cap films.

It's not tough to compare films in terms of their overall quality. I don't think that anyone would give extra bonus points to Batman v Superman just because it was the result of Zack Snyder's vision lol. In fact, any film with his name on it kind of automatically loses points just by virtue of his having touched it, doesn't it? I mean, even Michael Bay's moving-images-accompanied-by-sound are the result of his "vision," such as it is; the man has a very distinct...uh..."style." But one wouldn't give a Michael Bay film any kind of special consideration because of it. Just because Iron Man 2 doesn't do much to convey Jon Favreau's style doesn't mean I wouldn't rather watch it any day of the week over Man of Steel.

I mean, yeah, I would personally say that Michael Bay films are more interesting to talk about than a lot of his peers, lol.

In the post you're quoting, I state that I consider Snyder's films worse than anything in the MCU (again, besides IM2, which is such a mess). However, as someone who recently read and weirdly enjoyed Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Strikes Again, I definitely see value in enjoying a flawed creative endeavor over something more cohesive but also much safer, without as much personality. I love defending safe as not inherently bad, but I get why someone would crave a flawed work with its own personality over that safeness.

Aside from the two Guardians films, I'm pretty sure I like this way more than anything from Marvel.

I would put Iron Man, Avengers, Winter Soldier, Civil War and Doctor Strange above Wonder Woman. Which is good because I would place BvS and Suicide Squad dead last.

  17. I'm not sure if this is your intention but I don't feel that there is anything risky/creative about the DCEU. The one style characteristic is over use of slow-mo. Most of the action looks like a video game cut scene. Believe me, I would love some great DC flicks. I was certainly pulling for Wonder Woman and made sure to see it opening weekend, but at this point I would scrap the DCEU and reboot a few years down the line.

In respect to Marvel, yeah they have some safe movies but I feel each franchise kind of brings in something fun/different. Ant-Man had the heist aspect, Civil War was a sort of spy thriller, Guardians brought the sci fi and so on. Maybe the overall hero's journey is similar but they definitely package it in an enjoyable way that I can definitely go back to over and over again. I would love for DC to give me something that I can't aait to own on home video, but since The Dark Knight that hasn't happened.

Look, I hate Zack Snyder and love Marvel movies, lol. I regularly go to bat for Iron Man 3 and Age of Ultron. You don't have to convince me that Marvel is good.

However, while I do think that there's a lot more room for a director's flavor in the MCU than people sometimes say, there is still ultimately an intentional tonal and stylistic continuity to the films that gives these films a leash. You can have both Winter Soldier and GOTG in this world, but you thus far couldn't have something like Logan. I would also argue that you couldn't have a Snyder MCU. I personally don't think that's a bad thing, as Feige's creative vision has kept their weakest films mostly stronger than other studios, but I'm also glad that DC, Fox, and Sony still get their occasional successes that are outside of that vision.

And, again, I find Snyder endlessly frustrating, but while other people can do slow-mo (James Gunn, Patty Jenkins, and Brian Singer have), I don't know of many people who do the specific thing that Snyder does. Like Michael Bay, his films are typically a hot mess, but his direction has a style that other similar directors (like Brett Ratner, for example) can't do.

How the heck did this thread turn into me technically defending DC? lulz.

Saw this last night, definitely overhyped and overrated. I felt like 90% of the movie was (Very bad) CGI and felt like I was watching a video game with bits and pieces of acting. I could be biased at this point, but it seems like they were trying too hard to not take itself too seriously and force a lot of unnecessary laughs just to win over audience memebers (which was a bit off given that they were in the middle of WWII). I'd say this was DC's mediocre attempt at making a marvel movie along the lines of Thor (one of my least favorite).

    Other quick thoughts:
Bad guy was ridiculous and super lame.

Never had time to get to know the other characters and therefore never cared about them. It's like I saw a lot of them of the screen but really never got to know them. For example, at the end when she's looking at the picture of all them, the other guys (besides Steve) were still random guys to me. Rogue One did a wayyyy better job and introducing characters for a stand alone movie that I actually liked and cared about, and would make me want to watch it again.

All in all, it was entertaining enough, but it's a one and done for me.

I'm not sure how you get Thor when the obvious parallel is to Captain America...
