  2. Travis probably couldn't book a ship in time, or is getting there later than expected.

Listened to When Your Heart Stops Beating, Box Car Racer's S/T and blink's S/T today. The holy trinity of blink projects imo.

    Yeah that's what I figured.

But to be honest I was trying to get @BTDandFeelingThis to respond so I could troll him and say "Maybe they have another concert booked in the Bahamas" just to piss him off because his concert got rescheduled due to the Bahamas event disaster.

I relistened to Box Car Racer after that profile with Tom recently. I know he always said it was influenced by Fugazi and Rites of Spring but I never put much stock into that, I always felt it was basically blink but 2% heavier with no Mark and less songs about girls and high school and more songs about the government and 9/11. But on relisten I think I get where those influences come from. It's way more groove based than any blink stuff previously, far more instrument driven and with more variation in song structures. Tom's guitar and bass really do more interesting and complex stuff bouncing back and forth with Travis' rhythm on that record than he'd done with blink, which was pretty standard riffs over drums stuff. Not every song lands 100% for me and I don't quite get why he felt that stuff like "And I" and "There Is" was so ill-suited for blink, but I do really love that album a lot. Box Car Racer/untitled Tom is probably my favorite Tom as a songwriter, then Descendents biting Tom from Cheshire/Dude Ranch, then super slick, pop Tom in Enema/TOYPAJ. Post 2004 Bono-lite Tom I could take or leave.

  7. Yeah, And I is basically a Blink song. There Is probably could have been as big as Adam's Song if Blink put it out as a single. I think BCR shines in the more experimental songs: Watch The World, Cat Like Thief, Tiny Voices, etc.

Cat Like Thief is maybe my favorite song on that album. So chill and Tim Armstrong is so pleasantly weird. I didn't realize until like a decade later that Jordan Pundik was on it, I assumed all the non-Tim Armstrong vocals were Tom, including the "doooooon't leaaaaaave"s.

I know Tom is not a songwriter I am particularly invested in anymore but he mentioned collaborating with Ben Gibbard in that profile and 15 year old me can't help but desperately want to hear that. But Jerry Finn was so integral to the Box Car Racer album and a huge part of what made it so good that if Tom were to put out a new BCR record, even with Travis, if it didn't have a producer it'd be hard to care beyond whoever would actually guest on it.

  9. Cat Like Thief rules. I still can't pinpoint where Jordan is singing, though.

It's the harmonies at the end. He just adds the "doooooooon't leeeeaaaaave her" of Tom's. He has the high part. There's no way you could tell it's him just by listening.

I could be wrong, like I said, it's indistinguishable from Tom's voice in that part and I only know it's him because it's what I've always been told (though it's really the only part that could be anyone but Tom/Tim)

The whole album should have just been the next Blink record, I think that's what broke them up really, as it portrayed Tom to be this really edgy musician and Mark as just a three chord wonder.

A friend of mine whose band were signed to MCA at the time said Mark had been told it was just going to be a small acoustic record with little label backing, so he was super angry when it became what it did.

For me, it's Tom's best work and the production from Jerry Finn is his absolute finest. I prefer it to the self titled album.

Finally got the chance to listen to my Deluxe vinyl this weekend, and I really like the new songs. I actually think I like the ones they hadn't released yet the most. Good Old Days and Hey I'm Sorry really stood out (I still had never heard Hey I'm Sorry). Bottom of the Ocean is cool too. Pretty cool that we got this many new songs and they were all at least decent.

It says a lot about some of Tom's live vocal
performances that I don't think it sounds that bad ...
