my favorite gaslight 3-song stretch is when I listen to blue jeans & white t-shirts 3 times in a row

Actually, there's two runs on Crowes that give that a run for it's money.

The first three songs and the last three songs.

  5. This is kind of cheating because Blue Dahlia isn't on the proper album, but it's still a great three-song run

It definitely gave me pause but damn if that run isn't something.

    I think God's a painter

handwritten -> here comes my man -> mulholland drive

(i like mulholland way more than 45)

i listened to handwritten for the first time during he best mushroom trip of my life and during that three song stretch specifically i was like "i can do anything". which might be true or it might not but that feeling inhabited every cell in my body and i was forever changed (and then that feeling hit even harder during the last two goddamn what a way to close an album)

I think "I Believe Jesus..." is a top 5 fallon song for me. I think that's a bold statement considering his catalogue but fuck it man, I'm sayin' it.

"I Believe Jesus Brought Us Together" is so underrated. He opened with it at Newport Folk Festival a couple years back, for an audience who really didn't know who he was... and he just had them in the palm of his hand from that point on. It was so awesome to see.

Interesting. Let's hope the guy that recorded/mixed Young New England won't be involved ;-). Less Transit and more early Gaslight sounds.

I definitely underrated Handwritten when it came out (and still think it's a step down from the two before it), but it really holds up well compared to the grab-bag of Fallon projects that have followed it.

Glad it isn't Butch again. I like Butch, his music, and most of his production work but it's super polished and I think Brian could benefit from a more "unfinished sound."

We're probably nver getting another Hottible Crowes record, but since Brian Fallon has shifted a bit to Brian Fallon and the Horrible Crowes while they tour, Ted Hutt seems like a perfect and comfortable choice. Brian, Ted and fans all know the magic that's come from previous albums.

Also, it takes a step closer back to Gaslight Anthem territory. Can't wait to hear what Brian has come up with. Plus Ted's produced 3 (and soon to be 4 albums) so I think fans can give him some credit for helping those guys discover their sound(s).

Butch was the perfect pick for Painkillers, which was more of a classic pop/folk-pop record, but if Brian is doing Elsie II like he talked about when I interviewed him, then Hutt is the right pick.

I definitely think Butch's polish helped the Painkillers songs though. I really don't like way the Georgia EP sounds, and think those songs would have benefited from the Butch Walker touch.

There's probably things like cost and schedules to consider as well, even though they have very different sounds. Butch is probably pretty booked up and not very cheap.

I couldn't possibly agree with all of this any more. The songs on the Georgia EP are fantastic songs, but I don't think they sound very good at all on that EP, very flat sounding.

Also extremely excited about Ted Hutt being the producer for Brian's next solo album. Aside from just the technical aspect of production, like how the music sounds, this is the guy who produced some absolute masterpieces with Brian in the past. Not to sound too corny or anything, but there's that intangible stuff you can't quite describe or put your finger on about making an album, and these guys went into a studio together in the past and came out the other end with albums like The '59 Sound and Elsie.

    And American Slang.

Definitely also American Slang. That wasn't a knock on AS, more just keeping my sentence short for the sake of brevity. But I suppose when they made 3 albums together listing 2 of them in my example could make that 3rd album feel bad.

I love that aspect of any kind of creative endeavor like making an album or a movie, where, yes, you have to get all of the technical pieces in place, but there's also some kind of magical alchemy that happens sometimes, that lightning in a bottle.

I'm from Mass and have always been a fan of Transit, especially their earlier stuff, and I'm also a fan of Ted Hutt - but The album Young New England is not at all what I would have predicted them working together would sound like. Not at all.

Is the interview where he talks about doing "Elsie II" something you're working on or was it released and I missed it?

I don't think that was a very good pairing either between Ted and Transit. That said, Transit didn't write a good collection of songs and the older brother working the boards didn't really sound good to me. What I mostly blame Ted for is not preventing that from happening. I'm surprised he let the band get away in pre-pro with mediocre to bad songs. And when he heard some of the mixes I'm surprised he didn't step in and become a louder voice.
