It's also an identifiable phenomenon that people will identify two or three voices as just being from that band without really separating them. Like people who hear Daltry and Townshend and are like "Oh, The Who" but not think which is which.

 

well yeah, but people are straight up saying they don't recognize there are two vocalists at all haha

 

Ive always had trouble distinguishing if a band has two singers. Tigers Jaw took me a while, and i wasnt able to tell with Menzingers until ATP, but i can differentiate the older stuff better now. Still cant quite tell with Captain sometimes. Emery is another one i had trouble with when i first started listening, but that one is pretty easy these days.

i think the way vocals are recorded play into this a lot. if you have two people singing in the same key produced the same, it takes a little bit of effort to tell who is who.

Right. It's because you know all those sounds are Tigers Jaw. It's weird, but it happens.

 

For real though are these two people?

 

haha yeah. one guy gets more raspy when he sings high notes, the other guy has more vibrato in his voice. they are the most similar to me out of all the ones mentioned.

I think what throws people off is the mixing. When listening to a record a lot of the times vocals are mixed the same for two singers, which is why this happens. They are filtering out some of the same overtones and what not.. I think that the new Menzingers record separates the singers a lot better than OTIP and Rented world.

 

I doubt we'll get anything for their debut but really holding out hope for a Chamberlain tour in 2020. I'd have been bummed about not getting Deep Sleep, Time Tables, Rivalries, Tasker Morris, or Chamberlain Waits if their setlist wasn't so damn good.

I agree with this last point, though I'm not sure if there's actually a difference or I was just more aware of it because I didn't know there were two singers until the After the Party cycle.

 

There are a few Menzingers parts that are hard to tell (ironically I would say parts of I Can't Seem To Tell is one of those).

I had no idea idea until recently that Tigers Jaw had two different (not-Brianna) singers.

and tbh the band I have a bigger issue with is Lawrence Arms. I legitimately have no idea who sings what because Brendan Kelly does two different singing styles?

 

I'd be so happy if that happened. I could see them maybe doing a hometown show for it but not a tour. Maybe play it at Fest or something as well.

The first time I saw them was right after Chamberlain came out so I've gotten to see that whole album basically but I definitely miss hearing a lot of them live.

 

Lawrence Arms is definitely sometimes hard to distinguish when Brendan isn't yelling

 

They sound different but not like different people necessarily. I've played with a bunch of people who sings completely different depending on the context. It's not so much that I don't recognize a difference, I just don't recognize that difference as meaning it's a different person.

Also people sometimes have trouble telling if emery have two singers

 

I also personally sing like two different people because I lack range and the discipline necessary to try and fix that. Ask Randall, I'm either a shitty Matt Berninger or a shitty Kevin Devine and I have absolutely no way of connecting that bridge.

 

I remember finding out when I was like 18 after listening to Clarity my entire life that Jim wasn't singing "Blister". My whole life was a lie.

Since it was brought up before - I had no idea Tigers Jaw had two male singers lol. I just thought Ben just improved a lot haha.

Otherwise, I love this album a lot. I think about the only song I'm not completely in love with so far is Same Stone, but it's still a good song!

 

I think the one band that I find hard to tell apart is Captain, we're sinking. I recall reading a review on Tigers Jaw s/t (I think on absolutepunk by Thomas?) And the way they described the languid quality of Adam's voice made it so easy to tell when he was singing. And then Charmer came out and it just got even more pronounced cause it'd been so long between full albums.

 

All of these are bobby except annina and shoddy workmanship - annina has both of them and shoddy workmanship is just Leo until the brother callback at the end, when they both sing
