I'm assuming the earth is also flat around those parts? Maybe dinosaurs were a figment of their imagination and global warming is just a couple of extra sunny days?

My hard headed brother is the only one that won't admit it. Luckily I'm fortunate to have a cousin who is LGBTQ and she's married to a very very intelligent black woman who is very well versed in politics and social justice, as well as having an uncle who works for the FBI and is very quick to point out how corrupt those systems and people are. They are always a joy to see on holidays since they always teach me something and the way they can command a room is inspiring. They've managed to change most of my families minds and I'm thankful for that.

I feel grateful that my family universally despises Trump. Even my grandparents who watch a ton of Fox News hate him and wouldn't vote for him. While definitely right-leaning and watch a shit-ton of Fox News (though they seem aware I'm not interested and it's never on when I'm visiting) they don't seem as affected by it as a lot of people.

i don't know any MENA minority person off the internet who's a leftist so that's my dilemma. i only know the leftists thanks to twitter. literally all friends/family/relatives are hardcore right wing and still defending trump, so.

lol i hate being able to say "i'm glad we can relate to each other", especially as poc/minorities ourselves. because it really does suck. but the level of frustration is too high.

I genuinely don't know how to make them understand. Plus, I can't offer up any leftist idea without being shot down as Castro incarnate or Chavez's son. I'm stalemated as hell. Can't wait til I move out so I can join political activist groups.

    (Future Mayor of Miami maybe)

I had an Uncle who tried to tell me that at least Republicans gave Obama a fair chance, but that the dems won't do that for Trump.

I would've been furious, except I had to step out of the room because I was going to laugh way too hard.

I was already the black sheep of my family, but Trump has definitely driven the biggest wedge between us. I don't think I'll ever be as close to any of them again. They eat up the fake news shit and then use the "it's just my/your opinion" to either defend their bullshit or dismiss any information to the contrary.

Fox News and far-right media have totally radicalized them, my father in particular - especially in the past five years or so, he's been consumed by conspiracy bullshit and went from never having owned a gun to owning nearly half a dozen. Damn shame.

I just talked to 2 people at lunch who didn't know anything about the events of the last 2 weeks and think "it's too hard/don't know how to decide where to get news from".

"It takes a bunch of like super intense cross referencing from really different sources. I don't know how to do that."......

I'm feeling grateful right now. My immediate family is always left leaning. I honestly have a good amount of political persuasion over my parents. They just generally don't follow it too closely. My Dad says he's independent but he's always supported the Democrats since I've been alive. I kind even imagine having to have these kinds of arguments at home though. Home is where I get to completely vent about it all. My extended family I honestly can't read too while in terms of left vs. right. I have a couple Uncles who I think are pretty thoughtful, and I'm not sure they really subscribe to partisan politics. Other than the Uncle I mentioned above, I don't really have anyone in my family who openly supports Trump. The general consensus is that Trump is a moron and a danger to the country, but we really don't get into politics too much at family gatherings, so I don't know where all my cousins and stuff stand specifically. I've kind of taken for granted though how reasonable my family is.

My dad is a Republican, but honestly may not have even voted. He's never been super civically engaged. His brother and my cousin in law are both pretty conservative Trump voters. I don't talk politics with the family at all, though my cousin in law engages me on facebook now and again.

My mom will pretty much never vote Republican but is a classic older white democrat in that she has some racist tendencies....doesn't like people on welfare, etc. I'm sure I could probably talk her into being a social democrat, she always complains about working people like her not getting the help they need while the poor people get everything even though they're lazy and etc. She knows I'm a progressive though and agrees with me on most things. But also falls into the "I don't know who to believe anymore" and "they're all crooks" and etc.

My g/f is a moderate liberal who calls herself a Republican and it's frustrating as hell lol. I'd say over 50% of the arguments we get into are over politics. She's smart but doesn't dive into policy at all, so her arguments are usually very on the surface and what not. But I spend a lot of time asking leading questions that eventually lead to me saying "Okay, so you support ______, but you vote for the party that supports ______ instead....that makes no sense."
