I actually like Oh Love quite a bit. One of my favourite songs from the Trilogy.

    Low bar to set admittedly...

"Oh Love" is fine, but I also echo the "why is it five minutes long" comment.

Like I don't hate it but it just plods along and feels longer than 5 minutes lol. And it is actually one of the better trilogy songs. My favorite is Stay The Night, a song I actually legitimately love, no trilogy low bar needed haha.

Dookie is phenomenal. I know that's not unpopular. I'm just listening to it now and it got me all pumped.

It's hard for me to think of Green Day in terms of albums. They have good songs, and less good versions of those songs, not a whole lot of variety to pick through. You've heard one you've heard them all.

Lot more progression in the music of other big trios like Blink or Alk3

I'd say the exact opposite actually. Aside from the self titled Blink album, there's absolutely no progression or stylistic shifts in their discography. Pretty standard pop-punk/pop-rock all the way.

I love Alkaline Trio, but again I don't think they're particularly progressive. Crimson maybe is a tad more experimental and left field, but it's still 3-4 minute melodic punk songs with slightly silly, tongue in cheek "dark" lyrics.

For all Green Day's flaws, they don't lack ambition - AI is a wonderfully ambtious album that they fully deliver on. Despite being a stinker , releasing a triple album shows a hell of a lot of ambitous/confidence. Misplaced confidence, but confidence nonetheless.

I think there's a lot more variety in Green Day's discography than the other two bands. Some of it excellent (Warning), some of it atrocious (Nightlife) - but it's more consistent variety and progression than Blink or Trio.

A triple album isn't ambitious when all three parts are boring as sin

It's still ambitious. They don't deliver on it whatsoever, and its mostly shite - but releasing a triple album is ambitious, regardless of how good it is.

I would disagree when the music isn't ambitious. Simply releasing a lot of music isn't ambitious in and of itself. Besides the three albums weren't even released at the same time

I would disagree again, there was ambition and stylistic risks taken on that album. Nightlife is atrocious, but it's nothing like Green Day have ever released before. There's plenty on there that's new ish ground for them, just executed appallingly. I don't think ambition is synonymous with quality at all.

There was like 2 and a bit months between the three albums - it's still a triple album to me, just one with a slightly staggered release.

Our Last Night's covers are better then their orginal music. They make the orginal pop songs seem tolerable as well.

i mean if i recorded 30 songs of me pooping i wouldn't really say i was being ambitious. i know it's different but not really.

Absolutely. I mean, the simple act of releasing three albums of new material in the space of a few months--and having none of it be b-sides, demos, or outtakes from past records--is ambitious. Isn't the narrative of that album cycle that they tried to take on something too big, with disastrous results? Ambition has more to do with goals than actual results.

But they definitely did try new things with those records. A lot of those songs are distinct departures from everything they'd done up to that point.

Green Day were a very good band at what they were doing. Deserve whatever respect they get. I haven't liked anything after AI really but they're decent songwriters across the board

If you recorded 30 tracks of you popping and released it for everyone to hear, expecting people to pay for it - that's definitely ambitious. Saying something is ambitious isn't a defence / praise of that thing, it's a description.

Really just baffled that someone claimed Green Day had less variety than Blink 182

The trilogy wasn't ambitious, come on haha. It was the same thing almost every band does but they charged money for it instead of doing the smart thing and not putting out bad songs.

Alkaline Trio doesn't have that much variety honestly. They just do one thing really well.

For starters, Mark's songs sound way different from Tom's songs. I would double down on that statement about blink 182. Even within albums there's more variety.

I honestly am not a Green Day OR blink fan at this point so this isn't an argument I'm gonna follow along passionately with haha
