I often say Boxer as my favorite but I honestly can't think of a band who it's harder for me to choose a definitive best.

I think it's close, I'd have it second. I think it's got their best songs, but in the album vs album discussion I've gotta go with Boxer, which remains maybe the most cohesive complete listen in the modern indie rock pantheon. and doesn't have anything as fiercely mediocre as soho riots

It's usually whatever the last one I listened to is. So right now it's trouble which I do think has matts best, or at least most emotionally affecting, lyrics

Soho Riots is one of the best songs on Alligator wtf

Yeah. For lyrics, I definitely go with TWFM, with Alligator as a close second.

Glad to see these show up on a list, all so good without being the 'big' songs from their respective albums.

Take another sip of them it

I'll take Apologies to the Queen Mary

But as far as The National goes it's probably a toss up for Boxer and Alligator for me for favorite record.

This morning feels like a Alligator morning. This band goes so well with coffee.

Alligator is such a mid-20's record to me. I still love it but I feel like I connected with it so much more from 22-27

They do indeed have some great b-sides also. Hell there's almost a full albums worth just from the High Violet sessions and those are all great.

HV or Alligator is my favorite album but there's a case to be made for all 5 (yes 5 I think Sad Songs is just as strong as the other 4 :P)

Alligator is amazing and honestly better than Boxer in my book but after growing on me for like a year, it's pretty tough to top High Violet. Trouble Will Find Me will always hold a special place in my heart though for being my introduction to the band and soundtracking my freshman year of college. They're quite the band to take late-night walks with

Fuck a top 10 lists all I know is "Humiliation" is underrated and the guitar-work on that track is amazing

edit: fuck i love this band.

To me, Humiliation is the best song on TWFM, and it's not even close.
Also, Soho Riots needs to be talked about more.

I couldn't possibly rank a top 10 but I can say with certainty The Geese of Beverly Road is their best song. Alligator has their best songs, Boxer is their best album, and TWFM makes you question both those statements, so all of it is great. We need Rylan tho.

Boxer will always be number one... I found them a week before that album came out.

Seen them live now 7 times, Clogs twice... hoping to catch the Portland and maybe 2x Seattle shows, easily my favorite band of all time.

I've only seen them once but it was my favorite show ever, with tame impala opening it's like the show was tailor made for me
