When an artist breaks new ground, no it's not going to appeal to everyone -- and isn't that kind of the point?

I don't mean to over aggrandize Kendrick in particular but whenever ANY artist brings new things to the table it's not like it's accepted with open arms by every fan of the genre. Radiohead brought new sounds to alternative rock, most notably fusing that sound with polar opposite genres like jazz and electronics.... and a lot of people think they are overrated as shit. But the bottom line is they influenced a lot of bands and how music as a whole sounds regardless who likes them or not.

Kendrick is, for example, bringing poetry and spoken word into the mix as well as James Brown-era funk, and those are not things we've heard a lot of in 2000s and 2010s mainstream rap.

How do you distinguish between "creative" and "artistic"? If you discredit an artist artistically you're discrediting them creatively. Right?

What do you MEAN when you say frogs are made of mud and can control the weather? Some may say you have no idea what you're talking about and are incredibly misguided, but I really just want to get to the bottom of this

And this is an example of how we should look at art. We see it so selfishly, like it's limited to our own presuppositions, but the best art is bigger than us and our own personal tastes. If I didn't enjoy Kendrick's music, I hope I'd still be able to recognize its significance in being the voice of a culture that's been invisible to so many people (me included).

Don't mistake me for saying everyone has to acquire a taste for Kendrick or Radiohead or The Beatles, but I think it's important to recognize the artistic and cultural significance their music brings regardless of whether or not we enjoy or listen to them.

I've seriously seen Dodgeball over 100 times and only recently while watching Heavyweights realized that Stiller plays essentially the same character in both films and it's awesome.

KRS-ONE, The Last Emperor and Brother Ali made poetic rap before Kendrick and about his style his not that distinctive compared to the mainstream.

I dunno, I think someone can be really good and really creative without having to be compared to others who are also good/creative

I was never into Silence in Black and White or If Only You were Lonely but everything Fragile Future and forward I really enjoy. Except Hate. Hurt and Hope were great though.

i think Drake should focus on pop/dancehall because he's pretty good at that and he's often outshined by guest rappers on his own tracks

Can't get into Radiohead. I understand the appeal and respect them as musicians, but they just aren't my thing

I can listen to an album of theirs and think it's very good from top to bottom, and then forget about it in an hour.

the thing that gets me about Radiohead - and a few other bands - is that i love them to death but can only listen to them at certain times. like, a beautiful 90 degree blue sky summer day is not the time to throw on most Radiohead songs, at least for me, so i have to be in a certain mood / mindset to listen to Radiohead and some other bands / albums no matter how much i love em.

It bothers me when people put Taylor Swift on a pedestal for how she's ~not like the other young stars and put down the "trainwreck stars" when I don't think it's fair. She grew up wealthy. Her parents could move for her career, she could afford to be picky and hold out for creative control. so many child stars go wrong because they feel that pressure to be the breadwinner of the family, they are uneducated and accept any contract, their families exploit them, and that line becomes blurred and they get surrounded by "yes men." They have nobody looking out for them. Taylor's parents were well off regardless of if she made it and her dad worked in finance, which is often another big downfall of young celebs.

That's not to downplay her success and if she's a role model for young ppl and inspires them to set a template for how they approach their careers that's awesome, but it makes me uncomfortable when people use her to put down other young stars, sort of dismissing the uniquely privileged situation that worked in her favor. I feel like it's a common narrative around her, even still

Controversial opinion: Terrain should be winning this poll

Maybe you guys can help us get on this big Daytona Beach music festival!

we have a good song HERE I guess, and some cool live videos HERE, if you wanna listen before you cast a vote. Not to derail all the hostile arguing in this thread of course. :) I've been on AP / Chorus a long time, am very familiar with a lot of regulars here -- I would be SUPER GRATEFUL it if you could help me out with one click on this poll.
